How To Make Stickers With Tape
October 04, 2023
Here’s the good news. You don’t need expensive equipment and materials to make your own stickers at home. You can design stickers using common items you probably already own, such as packing tape and some colored pens!
Making your own stickers with tape is a budget and DIY-friendly craft that you’re sure to enjoy. Plus, you’ll end up with some cute personalized stickers you can use to decorate your stuff. If you’re interested in making stickers with tape, here’s your complete guide on how to do it.
Materials Needed
First off, you’ll need to gather a couple of materials. And we think you have some or all of these lying around somewhere!
- Clear packing tape
- Parchment paper or wax paper
- Thin paper (such as printer paper)
- Pens, pencils, markers
- Eraser
- Coloring materials
- Scissors

How To Make Stickers With Tape
Draw and Cut Your Design
Now that you have everything you need, it’s time to sit down and let your creativity flourish. On a sheet of thin paper, draw your design. Use your coloring materials to add depth and visual appeal to your drawing. When you’re happy with your design, cut a nice outline along the edges. This sticker is yours to keep, so feel free to make any design you want! Let your personality and interests shine through in your drawing — and don’t be afraid to think out of the box. If you’re not keen on drawing your own design, you can opt to cut out an image from a magazine or print a design on paper with water-resistant ink.
Cover the Sticker Design With Packing Tape
Next, take your parchment paper or wax paper and clear packing tape. Cut a piece of tape that’s slightly bigger than your design, then stick it on the parchment or wax paper.
If your design is larger than the width of your packing tape, you can stick two pieces of tape stacked onto each other. This, however, will create a visible seam where the two pieces of tape meet. So, if you want a cleaner look, we recommend making a smaller sticker that fits into one strip of tape.
Place your design cut-out on top of the tape. Then, cut another piece of tape similar in size and carefully stick it over your design. Make sure to do this precisely — the last thing you want is to remove the tape once it adheres to the drawing, as this can tear the picture and ruin your design.
Press on the Front and Rub the Surface
When you stick the layer of packing tape over your design, you might notice a couple of air bubbles. You’ll want to get rid of them to make your sticker look polished and professional. To do that, press on the front of your sticker and rub the surface, pushing air bubbles out towards the edges. To achieve a smoother surface, use your fingernails or a penny to press on the sticker and help the tape bind with the paper completely.
Cut Your Design
Now, it’s time to cut your design. With the parchment paper or wax paper intact, cut around the edges of your sticker and remove any excess tape. You’ll want to follow the outline that you made earlier or make a 1-inch border around it.
Make sure there is no tape sticking out of the sticker, and soften any sharp edges for a more professional look!
When you’re ready to use the sticker, you can simply peel the parchment paper or wax paper off the back and stick it onto any surface.
Conclusion
Making your own stickers is a fun and easy craft that we’re certain you’re going to enjoy. With a couple of materials you already have at home, and a few minutes of your time, you can create a sticker that’s uniquely and proudly yours.
